Dire Straits -
"Tunnel Of Love" from Making Movies (1980)

Mark Knopfler's masterwork. A mesmerizing guitar epic that begets myriad lyrical gems, "She took off a silver locket  she said remember me by this / She put her hand in my pocket I got a keepsake and a kiss" and commences one of the greatest Rock albums. No matter what you were doing, after  5 minutes you'll just be listening. Guaranteed.

Terence Trent D'Arby -"Wishing Well" from Introducing The Hardline...(1987)
Powered by a swaggering beat and a mighty James Brown vocal, 1987's best single breathed life into the stale late-eighty's pop charts and remains a great listen seventeen years later.

Lucinda Williams -
"Hot Blood" from Sweet Old World (1992)
Shopping for a 70's dinnertime staple has never sounded sexier. "Well I saw you in the grocery store buying tomatoes for a casserole."

Heart -
"Barracuda" from Little Queen (1976)
Powerful and melodic vocals combine with a predatory guitar riff producing an angler's dream.

Whiskeytown -
"If He Can't Have You" from Faithless Street (1998) (Reissue)
Before Ryan Adams became the poster boy for the alt-rock press, he helped create this alt-country masterpiece. Twenty-one tracks on the reissue and not a bit o' filler.

The Motels -
"Dressing Up" from Motels (1979)
When Christian Dior ruled the fashion world, the Martha Davis fronted Motels ruled LA, mixing New Wave synth and Rock guitars, while singing about mohair suits and great shoes.

Roxy Music -
"Oh, Yeah" from Flesh & Blood (1976)
A lush tapestry of smooth romantic rock.

Cheap Trick -
"Oh, Caroline" from In Color (1976)
Have an extra 30 minutes? Then spend it with this classic set of tuneful ear candy--perfect Power Pop.

                  What's your favorite new CD?

Big Blue Hearts -
Here Come Those Dreams Again
(2005)

Seven years after their debut disc BBH and David Fisher deliver another beautiful collection of crooning romantic twang. Roy Orbison would be proud. Standout Track: "Lovin' You"

My Morning Jacket - Z
(2005)
Rock Record Of The Year
Extraordinary. Listen from start to finish, repeatedly. Absent are the previous Southern Rock stylings--present are vast arrangements and beautifully crafted, hypnotic melodies. Standout Track: "Knot Comes Loose"

Shout Out Louds - Howl Howl Gaff Gaff (2005)
Often sounding like Conor Oberst backed by the Strokes, singer Adam earnestly leads Swedish five-piece on their US debut (mainly from 2003 Scandinavian release). Standout Track: "Very Loud"

Kathleen Edwards - Back To Me (2005)
Like yours with a touch of twang? Then try this accessible offering of hook-laden, Canadian Alt-Country tunes. Standout Track: "Old Time Sake"

The Libertines -
The Libertines (2004)
Rock Record Of The Year Brilliant! A sloppy Rock & Roll supernova with a dash of polish and a pinch of fancy.  Enjoy them while you can.
Standout Track: "What Became Of The Likely Lads"

Tift Merritt -
Tambourine (2004)
An evolution from 2002's brilliant Bramble Rose, Merritt weaves her familiar Americana and new found Blues creating rich & remarkable textures and tunes. Don't miss the gorgeous Standout Track: "Laid A Highway"

On The Speakers -
On The Speakers (EP) (2004)
We discovered San Francisco's OTS at 2004's Noise Pop Festival. Like their set, the six song debut EP is an energetic, Indie Power Pop jaunt. Guitar's up-front  groove through understated and often breezy verses concluding in dramatic radio-friendly choruses. Standout Track: "Share Yourself"

The Killers -
Hot Fuss (2004)
Memorable Alt Rock propelled by 80's de rigueur  synth hooks and the occasional Michael Hutchence channeling. Standout Track: "Believe Me Natalie"

Stellastarr* -
Stellastarr* (2003)
Perfect for your next road trip. Cue-up this batch of frenetic  Pixies-like Rock and watch that odometer buzz. Standout Track: "My Coco"

British Sea Power -
The Decline Of British Sea Power (2003)
Rock Record Of The Year
BSP's self-proclaimed "classic" is stuffed with gigantic guitar hooks,  playful piano ("Pe-cul-iar pi-a-no riffs"), and layers of organ and vocals, making for a  dense and spectacular first CD. Epic aspirations realized. Standout Track: "Fear Of Drowning"

The Stills -
Logic Will Break Your Heart (2003)

Toronto's best new band debuts with a stunner. Swirling guitars, cool bass, moody vocals and an arty vibe make this CD soar.
Standout Track: "Lola Stars And Stripes"
